Copper Ridge west of Rimrock Road near 70th Street West may gain a grocery store.
A 16-acre parcel on the northwest corner of 62nd Street West and Rimrock Road was recently zoned community commercial and has caught the eye of Albertsons, the grocery store chain.
"Albertsons is certainly interested in that property and they're pursuing it," said Blaine Poppler with Coldwell Banker Commercial, the broker selling the land.
Developers with Copper Ridge recently received approval from the city and county planning board to expand the subdivision, which has grown substantially over the last decade.
Billings' far West End is growing at a rate of 9 percent every year, Poppler said. Billings as a whole grows at about 1.5 percent a year.
That means the west side of town currently is seeing "tons of residential growth" and it makes sense that Albertsons would want to be in the middle of it, Poppler said.
"Albertsons certainly sees the potential out there," he said.
The Boise-based grocery chain didn't immediately respond to questions on Wednesday about buying or building on the property.
If the company purchases the land and builds a store there, it could be the second Albertsons in the area.
In January, Billings City Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval of a drive-through for a pharmacy at the northeast corner of 54th Street West and Grand Avenue.
Rumors among brokers was that the project would be a new Albertsons and that construction would start in the spring. Nothing has happened on the property. The lot has sat vacant all year and no construction has started.
The site at 54th West and Grand is exactly 2 miles from the plot in which Albertsons is interested at 62nd and Rimrock. Currently the Albertsons at Rehberg Lane and Grand Avenue is the grocery store farthest west in the city.
There are six Albertsons locations in Billings.
