Workers started installing the base of a Ferris wheel this week at the new Scheels Sporting Goods store at Shiloh Crossing in Billings.

The crews also started building a two-lane bowling alley on the upper level of the store, and the store remains on schedule to open Sept. 6, said project manager Jason Loney.

“It’s a little in disarray right now. Once it’s done, it will be good,” Loney said while walking through a maze of boxes and building material.

The 16-car Ferris wheel will be assembled July 21.

North Dakota-based Scheels is still hiring the 400 employees it will need at the store, though key managerial positions have been filled, Loney said.

The 220,000-square-foot store is the second-largest Scheels nationwide.
