Unclaimed jewelry, rare coins, trinkets and other collectibles across Montana will soon be up for grabs to the highest bidder.

The state Department of Revenue announced last week it is beginning to auction unclaimed items from safe deposit boxes statewide. All items have been held for more than five years at bank and credit unions and been turned over to the state, agency officials said.

The Department of Revenue has hired online company Lone Star Auctioneers to conduct the sale. Bidders can view the items and register bids online at MontanaUnclaimedProperty.org.

People who believe the state is holding their property may check the Department of Revenue’s website at revenue.mt.gov. They may also email the agency at unclaimedproperty@mt.gov or call 866-859-2254.

A new collection of items will be up for bid every two weeks. Successful bidders will be charged a buyer’s fee of 10 percent.
