Billings’ newest lodging, My Place Hotel, opened last week, a key victory for a development supported by public funds.
The three-story, 64-room hotel at 4770 King Ave. E. opened Friday and had been under construction for the past four months at Billings Town Square. All rooms have a full kitchen, cabinets and a microwave with nightly rates starting at $82.
The new hotel has 12 employees, and My Place officials said they were eager to open after construction delays.
“The town just has a lot to offer. We try to focus on areas that have a real need for lodging,” My Place spokeswoman Elizabeth Haglund said Monday.
My Place is the newest business to open at the Billings Town Square, a 42-acre development at the intersection of South Billings Boulevard and King Avenue East. Cabela’s and Sam’s Club have also built stores, and developers are marketing the property to restaurants and other retail businesses.
The city of Billings partnered with California-based Foursquare Properties to start a tax increment financing district, or TIF, to develop the retail business park and make improvements in the area. The city spent about $4.5 million to widen King Avenue East.
Plans to develop the district began in 2007 but were shelved during the recession. A Holiday Inn Express was originally slated for the area but instead was built on Billings’ West End. Foursquare sold off its share to another developer.
The opening of My Place is a big win for the city, officials said. New businesses give the city more flexibility to pay for additional improvements, such as sidewalks and road work, officials said.
“Every new commercial project that occurs helps … allow the city to spend those funds to make the conditions better for that south district,” Bruce McCandless, assistant city manager for Billings, said.
The Billings location is the eighth nationwide for Aberdeen, S.D.-based My Place. The only other Montana location is in Bozeman, and the company is looking to build 17 more hotels in the Midwest and Northern Plains.
Including My Place, seven companies in the past year filed plans and are moving forward to build hotels in Billings.
