The JailHouse Gallery in Hardin will exhibit the ledger art of Northern Cheyenne artist Alaina Buffalo Spirit through Aug. 30.

The gallery, at 310 N. Center Ave., will host a reception for Buffalo Spirit on Saturday at 5 p.m.

What began as her hobby in painting fabric, jean jacket panels, curtain and wall hangings has turned into ledger art.

The traditional art form has been done in the past — mostly by men — to document battles and rituals. Now, Buffalo Spirit is using the medium to tell women’s stories. She also still paints on canvas and textiles. She said she blesses every canvas first with sweet grass or cedar.
