The biggest night of competitive poetry in Billings — the Billings Grand Slam — is set for Sunday at Venture Theatre.
Up for grabs is $170 in cash and prizes. The poetry slam is hosted by Jason (Big J) Harris and features music by deejay Tanner Vinecke.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the slam starts at 7. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students.
The event features two tiers of competition, high school and performance. The latter tier encompases college, amateur and professional poets.
The evening will include a conversation between Montana State University Billings English professor Tami Haaland and Billings poet Dave Caserio. The Rook, a literary magazine published through MSU Billings, will present editors’ choice awards and there will be a surprise announcement from Montana Slam organizer James Hickman.
The slam roster includes Nate Peterson, Anna Paige, Pete Tolton, Doug Oltrogie, Zak Kreiter, Mal Tift, Michael Schleining, Joshua A. Harris, Kayla Carranco, Cooper Malin, Almeda Bradshaw and Emma “Tansy” King.
