Emily M. Danforth, who grew up in Miles City, is the winner of the 2012 Montana Book Award for her debut novel, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”

The book, which draws heavily on the Miles City of the mid-1990s, centers on a teenage girl as she deals with the death of her parents and her blossoming sexuality.

The novel has received extensive critical praise, including a starred review from Booklist and a feature on National Public Radio.

Danforth teaches creative writing and literature courses at Rhode Island College in Providence.

Montana Book Award judges also selected four honor books:

-- “Fobbit,” a novel by Butte author David Abrams. The highly acclaimed debut is set in a public-affairs office at a forward operating base during the Iraq War.

-- “The Girls of No Return,” a novel by Erin Saldin that is described as “a lacerating young adult debut about girls, knives, and redemption.”

-- “Mammals of Montana,” by Kerry Foresman, published by Mountain Press Publishing Co. of Missoula.

-- “The Mountain and the Fathers,” by Joe Wilkins, about growing up in the Big Dry.

The Montana Book Award is an annual award that recognizes literary and/or artistic excellence in a book published during the award year.

Eligible titles are set in Montana, deal with Montana themes and issues or are written, edited or illustrated by a Montana author or artist. Books for all ages are considered for the award.

The award is sponsored by the Friends of the Missoula Public Library.
