The biggest barbecue weekend is coming up.

According to recent figures, at least 150 million hotdogs will be consumed on the Fourth of July and 700 million pounds of chicken will be purchased in addition to 190 million pounds of red meat and pork. It’s a popular day to get together with family and friends and in 2013, 41 million Americans did just that — went to someone else’s house for dinner.

Military bases celebrate the Fourth of July at noon by firing a gunshot for each U.S. state. Civilians have their own salute, setting off fireworks. More than 14,000 fireworks displays will be produced on July 4, according to an estimation by the American Pyrotechnics Association.

We asked our Facebook friends how they keep their backyard cookouts interesting.

Tim Harmon: Plenty of BBQ rubs from throughout the country, smoking chips and an adult beverage. Outdoor speakers are a must.

Rachelle Lacy: My original tried-and-true technique perfected through the years. For everyone’s enjoyment and safety, I caution all attendees to avoid the food, family and friends.

Jaci Webb: Putting together the right “Sloppy Swish” mixed tape is a must. I’m always pitching a game of horseshoes and my daughters always go for the bubbles.
