Where is it? 313 N. Merrill Ave. in Glendive. You can’t miss the red sign out front of this cozy little bar on Glendive's main drag. It’s right across from the massive railroad depot.
What makes it special? Not many bars claim to be a paddlefish headquarters. The Beer Jug has a mounted paddlefish on the wall and if you ask, bartender Meg Geiger will bring out a tiny jar with a pair of 2-inch paddlefish in it, preserved in formaldehyde. She won’t tell you where her favorite fishing hole is, though. Of the three beers on tap, one of them is a crisp, light summer beer, Wibaux Gold from Beaver Creek Brewery in Wibaux, 30 miles east. The bar claims to offer the best Swiss brats in town, and I can’t dispute that since I never tried a Swiss brat elsewhere, but the Beer Jug’s was juicy, smothered in sauerkraut and Swiss cheese and the popcorn chaser I had was excellent, made the old-fashioned way in a cast-iron kettle.
