The Ahn Trio's music is as fresh as the faces of the three Korean-born musicians.
The Ahn sisters, two of whom are twins Maria and Lucia, have performed at the Alberta Bair Theater at least three times in the last decade and their audience keeps growing. That's why I decided to explore their show Saturday night at the ABT.
"It's not often that we have an ensemble like the Ahn Trio that is so good, you keep bringing them back,'' ABT executive director Woody Wood said during his introduction.
About 600 people were there to revel in the trio's fiery interpretations of modern music. They did switch up one song, substituting a piece by Leonard Bernstein for Paul Chihara's "Orchids." Angella, the youngest sister who plays violin, explained that the trio has been invited to perform in Germany where the promoters expressly requested American music so the sisters have been working up pieces by the ultimate American composer, Bernstein.
"He wasn't afraid to have fun,'' chimed in Lucia, who plays piano.
Angella splits her time between Bozeman and New York City and her husband and several Bozeman friends were in the audience.
The evening's highlight was "Danceband,'' written for the trio by one of the premier modern composers, Kenji Bunch. It included five movements, all styled after dances from the jig to the disco boogie. Lucia explained that she uses a rolled up towel to coax unique tones for the piece out of her grand piano. She also plucks the piano strings using a guitar pick.
"That's not something I learned at Juliard,'' to told the crowd.
The song was performed just before intermission and a crowd gathered around the merchandise table looking for a recorded version of it. The new disc, "Lullaby for My Favorite Insomniac,'' was available and many copies were sold Saturday night, but it doesn't offer "Danceband.'' Enjoy this video of ">"Skylife'' instead.
