Who: The Hold Steady
Where: The Railyard Alehouse, 2526 Montana Ave.
When: Monday, October 19, 8 p.m.
Why you should go: This Brooklyn band's sold-out MySpace Secret show was the concert of the year with their barroom-infused rock and singer Craig Finn's lyrical storytelling. I know it's a busy weekend, but you will regret missing this show. Really.

What: See how Spike Jonze turned the 10-sentence book, "Where the Wild Things Are,'' into a feature-length film
Where: Wynnsong 10 or Shiloh 14
When: It opens tonight
Why go: Reviewers say it brilliantly captures the imagination of a 9-year-old boy. Plus, who can resist big fuzzy monsters tromping around in the woods.

What: "Paranormal Activity" Where: Shiloh 14 Theater.
When: Daily at 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. (The late show would probably pack the most punch).
Why you should go: In the 10 years since "The Blair Witch Project" set the standard, few horror movies have employed that fake, do-it-yourself documentary style to any effect. This one appears to be an exception.
