Oscar winner Jim Wilson’s latest film, “50 to 1,” the inspiring true story about legendary Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, opens Friday, June 13 at The Vue and Brew theater in Laurel.

Vue and Brew is the first theater in Montana to screen the film.

Wilson, who won an Oscar for “Dances with Wolves,” produced, directed and co-wrote the film, which follows Mine That Bird and his misfit New Mexico cowboy trainer and owners, who shocked the racing world with one of the most stunning come-from-behind victories in Derby history. The film’s stars include Skeet Ulrich, William Devane and Christian Kane.

This underdog story has been getting strong reviews across the country. It is rated PG-13.

Earlier this year, the cast and filmmakers traveled for five weeks on a cross-country promotional tour from New Mexico to Kentucky. The seven-state tour mimicked the story of Mine That Bird’s trip to the Derby with trainer Chip Woolley back in 2009.

Cast and filmmakers also attended this year’s Derby and got to see a similar story play out with the owners of California Chrome, who were also fish out of water in the elite world of Kentucky’s blue bloods.
