HARLOWTON — Agnes M. Clements, 96, of Harlowton, passed away Friday evening, July 18, 2014, in the Wheatland Memorial Healthcare of natural causes. This was the same day her mother passed in 1975.
She was born Feb. 13, 1918, at the ranch house near Hedgesville, the daughter of Mathias and Martha F. (Zeier) Fochs. She attended a one-room school at Wallum, riding to school in a wagon pulled by mules. She received her education in Shawmut after the Fochs family moved there in the summer of 1924. She received her high school diploma in Shawmut on May 17, 1935. She received the University of Montana High School Honor Scholarship. She attended Townsend’s School of Beauty Culture and received her certificate on July 21, 1937. She later attended St. Vincent School of Nursing in Billings, graduating on April 30, 1944. She practiced nursing in Anaconda and Warm Springs Hospital. She went to Seattle and worked in military hospitals there during World War II, receiving her license to practice nursing in the state of Washington on June 6, 1945.
She was united in marriage to Arnold Jacobson in Seattle, Wash., on that same day. They later divorced. She returned to Montana to the ranch at Shawmut, helping her brothers operate the ranch.
On Feb. 21, 1981, she was united in marriage to Cecil K. Clements in Big Timber. They lived in Shawmut and Alaska until his death in 1998. She entered the Wheatland Memorial Healthcare Nursing Home in 2006.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Shawmut. Agnes enjoyed sketching and was very artistic. She was a good cook who enjoyed fishing and catching seafood in Alaska. She enjoyed sharing stories about the history of the Shawmut area and the part her family had in its building and development. She had happy memories of riding the train between Shawmut and Barber.
She is survived by her stepson Russell Clements, stepdaughter Nona Holzhauer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Agnes was the third of nine children. She was the last surviving and was preceded in death by brothers, Francis, George, Paul, Raymond and Robert Fochs; sisters, Antoinette McCulloch, Montana Daley and Theresa Berg; and her parents.
Funeral Mass for Agnes M. Clements will be Friday, July 25, at 2 p.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Shawmut with burial to follow in the Harlowton Cemetery. A reception will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harlowton. The Perkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
