BIG TIMBER - Carl Emil Mosness, 83 of Big Timber, passed away on Wednesday September 17, 2008, at the Billings Clinic.

Carl started his busy life on Sept. 5, 1925. He was born to Ole and Edith Mosness in Big Timber after Edith had been hospitalized after a tent pole had hit her in the head during a windstorm at the circus she was attending. His life had been a three ring circus ever since.

Carl was raised on the family ranch west of Big Timber, he attended Duck Creek and Bridge Schools riding horseback with his siblings to attend them. He then went to school at Sweet Grass County High School until he joined the Army in 1942.

Carl was in the 75th Infantry Division where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and many others. He returned to Big Timber in 1946, when he married Thelma Slettebo. He started working at Coast to Coast and then went to work at the Gambles store where he remained for 44 years until he retired in 1995.

Carl was very active in the Moose Lodge, Knights of Pythians, Big Timber City Council, Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department, and he was also a 50-year member of the American Legion. Somehow he found time to square dance, become a state champion horseshoe thrower, visit Norway, camp with friends and family, play many hands of cards, and buy and sell cars. He lost Thelma in 1987 and married Sharon Nevin Pederson in 1988. He continued to travel, play music, and square dance with Sheri.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents Ole and Edith; his wife Thelma; and grandson Jason Harlan; siblings: Lillian, Ole, Osmund, Bonnie, Lennard, Ellen, and Edith.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of Big Timber; sons, Terry (Jean) Mosness, of Fort Collins, Colo., Gary (Susan) Mosness, of Big Timber and Tracy (Terry) Mosness of Spearfish, S.D., and his daughter Cheri (Kim) of Great Falls. Sheri also has two children who loved Carl, Alice (Mike) Roberts, of Gillette, Wyo. and Jim (Julie) Pederson of Newcastle, Wyo. His grandchildren that he loved very much, Rochelle Brownlee, Shannon Mosness, Joshua Harlan, Tyrel Mosness, Megan Mosness, Sara (Harlan) Wussow, Kristine (Harlan) Swope, Spencer Mosness, Greg Mosness, Lauren Mosness, Barbara (Roberts) Benfit, and JD Roberts. He had four great grandchildren and two more on the way.

He is also survived by his brothers Donald (Toots) Mosness, of Livingston, Rudy (Alice) Mosness, of Big Timber, Arnold (Lucille) Mosness, of Columbus, Kenneth (Sharon) Mosness of Carr, Colo., Bjarne Mosness, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and sisters, Selma (Forrest) Gibby, of Big Timber, and Edna Nelson of Big Timber. He was also very loved by his numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. We all know that he is sitting at the never-ending pinochle game in the sky. We'll see you in the funny papers Grandpa.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, at Stenberg Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Monday Sept. 22, at the Big Timber Lutheran Church with interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
