GARRYOWEN — We lost our beloved son, brother, nephew, grandson, and friend Cody Custer Real Bird, who passed away at the family home on Feb. 13, 2014.

Xalusshiissitchesh, “Loves to Run” a name given to him by Sonny Joe Reed, was born on April 19, 1990, in Bismarck, N.D. Cody was a son of Edward and Francine Real Bird. He was raised and lived at Whistling Water Loop, Garryowen, Mont. Cody was a child of the Bad War Deeds Clan and traditionally adopted by Richard (Dickie) and Jolene Whiteclay.

Cody’s proudest moment was the birth of his son, Talon. He enjoyed being a father and with the help of his parents, was raising his son.

Cody attended school in Hardin and graduated from the Northern Cheyenne Tribal School in Busby in 2009. He was very appreciative of the support and encouragement of his parents throughout his high school years. He especially enjoyed being a team member of the traveling basketball team the Garryowen Mustangs who played in tournaments throughout Montana, Wyoming and North and South Dakota. He played basketball as a Hardin Bulldog and Northern Cheyenne Eagles in his high school years.

He was baptized in the Episcopalian Church and his Godparents are Henry Little Light, and George and Twila Grant. He also shared in fellowship with the Christian Cowboys of Fellowship Athletes. Cody remained close to his spiritual mentors and was truly appreciative of their guidance and prayers.

Cody was an avid Horseman, and began riding horses at the age of 2, a passion that he loved and cherished, this passion allowed him to Team Rope side by side with his father, trained Race Horses and Indian relay horses with his parents, uncles and friends. He was teaching Talon the same qualities that he was raised in horsemanship. He was a member of the Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, Crow Reservation Team Ropers and Wrangler Team Roping Association.

He was proceeded in death by his Grandparents, George and Ramona Real Bird and Moses and Viola Brave (Cannonball, N.D.), an uncle Arnold Real Bird, brothers Bennett Brave and Stephan Beaumont.

Cody is survived by his son, Talon; daughter Jaycee Real Bird; father and mother and brother, Lander (Azurene); sisters, Angel (Marty) Big Back, Polly Real Bird Yarlott, Connie Roundtree; friend and significant other Barbara Bullchief. Other immediate family members include uncles, Randy (Raphaelle) Real Bird, Blaine Real Bird; aunts Susan Real Bird, Dora Kay Fallsdown, Doris Stewart and Donelle Boyer; traditional parents; brothers Seth, Jesse Whiteclay and Victor Grant; his namesake, PRCA Bullrider, Cody Custer.

Cody was blessed with many friends and family members which include families of the Fallsdown, Big Medicine, Other Medicine, Pickett, Birdinground, Real Bird, Moccasin, Littlelight (Martha Real Bird Family), House (Agatha), Costa, Grant (George and Twyla), Shelltrack, Mandan, Smith and Wise Spirit. Cody will also be missed by his many childhood friends and his many Cowboys and Cowgirl friends.
