LODGE GRASS — Cyril Not Afraid, 88, of Lodge Grass, passed to the other side camp, Jan. 8, 2012, in the Sheridan, Wyo., VA Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Lodge Grass, a son of Eliza Bacchus and Joseph Not Afraid, a descendent of Medicine Tail-Old Man Not Afraid. He grew up and received his education in Lodge Grass. Following his education, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was one of three Crow code talkers in the Army. During his younger years, he became the first Crow Indian bull rider, participating in numerous rodeos. In later years, he enjoyed watching his families participate in riding and roping events, caring on a tradition passed to him by his father. He was a cowboy at heart, but worked for the Holly Sugar Corporation for several campaigns, the Carpet Mill in Crow Agency and retired from the National Park Service in Fort Smith.

Cyril married Flora Medicine Horse on Feb. 6, 1946, in Billings and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan, was a Big Lodge child, Council of Elders, 107th Committee and the American Legion. He was a strong believer in the Sweat Lodge Ceremony. He loved the outdoors, especially when he could spend time on his well-kept yard.

His wife, daughters Lynette Not Afraid and Pamela Stewart, sons Gary, Wayne-Cowboy, Dee and Starr Not Afraid Jr., sisters Irene Not Afraid and Florence Real Bird, brothers Edward, Leo, Cedric, Joseph and Starr Not Afraid Sr. preceded Cyril in death.

Survivors include his sons, Leroy (Sheila), Willis, Marlin (Reva), Garland, (Isabelle) and CJ Not Afraid, Knute (Darlynn) and Newton (Georgette) Old Crow Jr., Robert (Tina) Stewart, Benito (Marsha) Brown and Larson (Patti) Medicine Horse; his daughters Francine (Charles) Amyotte, Adella Spotted Horse, Diane (Andy) Russell, Barbara Bacon, Paulette Not Afraid, Marilyn (Butch) LaFountain, Arvilla (Tom) Fly, Lorraine (Joe) Bear Cloud, Bertha (Paul) Nomee Jr., Melvina Jefferson, Deana LaForge, Elizabeth (Bruce) White and Myrna Medicine Horse; his brothers Art Plenty Hawk, Edward Not Afraid Sr., Pius and Charles Real Bird; his sisters Margo Real Bird, Ruth Backbone Alden and Caroline Yellowtail; his grandchildren Cheryl, Cyril, Cyrina, Zoey, Selena, Cree, Misty, Heidi, Leitha, Remi, Jorelle Marlin, Bruce White Jr., Suzette, Michaelynn, William, Lucille, Pearl, Tommy, Clinton, John, Gary, Elsie, JohnAnn, Pete, Preston, Thomas, Dee-Dee Doll, Terry, Francine, Gayle, Stephanie, Trudy, Claudia, Randean, Rhonda, Rochelle, Pewee, Larson, Myrna, Marty, Kim, Jeremy, Julie, Michelle, Mike, Randy, Alvin, Marsha, Liza Baby Doll, Edward III, Danielle, April, Randy, Carlton (Lori) Nomee Jr., Berthine, Jenny, Sarahvene, Regina, Colby and Ben Gros Ventre; his great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Heather, Carlyssa, Buster, DJ, Ty and Aaron; great-great-grandchildren, Harmony, Carly, Blaze and Teffany; as well as his extended family including the Medicine Tail, Bacchus, Not Afraid, Red Wolf, Pretty on Top, Bird, Left Hand, Plenty Hawk, Backbone and Not Afraid-Yellowtail families.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Crow Agency Multi-Purpose Building. Interment with military honors will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
