On Feb. 26, 2018, Derreck Dennis Ethan Cumin left his earthly bonds. Derreck was born on Jan. 26, 1992 in Billings, the son of Dennis Allen Cumin and Shauna Kerr Cumin. He attended McKinley Elementary School, Riverside Middle School, and Billings Senior High where he graduated in 2010. Derreck was a natural athlete. He played football and baseball in grade school. In middle school he played football and ran track. While at Senior, he was a member of the track team. Derreck was a member of publications staff, working on the Bronc Express and the yearbook. He moved to Missoula to attend the University of Montana where he graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management with an emphasis on entertainment. Derreck was also working through the University to become a Master bee keeper.

Derreck was a natural leader. In 2008, he was selected to go to Washington DC for a week as part of the Lead America Conference. These leadership skills showed in all he did. Whether organizing a crew to paint barns at the ranch, a barbeque, a road trip camping or to a concert or a snowboarding adventure, Derreck had it covered. He loved the outdoors, all his family, friends, music, and always put a little “Wiggy” in it. He was an individual that had seen sunshine through all the moments in life and projected that light outward for the universe to hold on to. He was an eclectic individual whose infinite ideas and projects touched many who knew him.

Derreck’s light was brighter than that of any other soul most of us have met. That is why he was always so eager to provide light for anyone going through dark times. He was a beacon for those who lost touch with themselves, and reminded us to smile and be strong and responsible. Most of all, he was the laughter that filled our lungs. He reminded us that we are only as old as we want to be and that not everything needed to be taken so seriously. Derreck was loved by everyone he met and made a dramatic impact in the short 26 years he spent with us here. He won’t be forgotten as his energy resonates through the universe and can be felt no matter where you might find yourself.

He is survived by his mother Shauna, brother Chad, nephew Zenneth, best friend forever Buster the dog, and the love of his life Sonja, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Dennis Cumin.

Memorials may be made to The Garden of One Thousand Buddha’s Arlee, MT, The University of Montana Entertainment Management program or plant a tree in Derreck’s name.

A Celebration of Derreck’s Life will be held at 2 p.m. March 10, 2018, Dahl Funeral Chapel, 10 Yellowstone Avenue. Reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus. Memories may be shared at
