COLUMBUS — Douglas R. Fitchner, of Columbus, Mont., passed away Fri., Feb. 28, 2014, at Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield, Ore., of natural causes. He was 59. Born Oct. 2, 1954, in Columbus, Mont. The son of Jack and Mary "Lucille" Fitchner. Doug was a 1974 graduate of Rapelje High School. Doug married Denise "Deanie" Rae Olson on Mar. 3, 1974. He and his wife owned and operated the Rapelje Service Center for 14 years, along with the Stockman Bar and Café for 6 years, while raising their three kids in Rapelje on the family ranch Fitchner Land and Livestock. After his parents sold the ranch in 1996, Doug and Deanie purchased a home in the rural area of Columbus.
Doug enjoyed working and traveling on the road. Sometimes it seemed like he worked too much, but that was what he loved, finding new challenges that made each day worthwhile. These qualities he instilled in his children. He enjoyed calling his kids almost everyday from the road to talk about everything and nothing at the same time. We feel that was how we stayed so close when we were all so far away. Anyone who knew Doug knew he was kindhearted and that he would do anything for you. He was quite the handyman to say the least. He was loved very much and will be missed dearly.
Survivors include wife Denise "Deanie" of Columbus; two sons, Brian of Columbus, Mont., and Nickolas of Winnemucca; and a daughter, Jaclyn of Eugene, Ore.; two sisters Nancy of Portland, Ore., and Mary of Bozeman, Mont.; two brothers Glen of Billings, Mont., Lyle of Roundup, Mont.; and five grandchildren. Preceding in death by his parents; and sister Carol of Custer, Mont.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at Columbus Evangelical Church in Columbus, Mont., East 1st Ave N. at 2 p.m. followed by a reception at the church.
