Eugene “Gene” Wehrman was born to Helen Frances (Lamire) Wehrman and Paul Gerhardt Wehrman on Aug. 19, 1937, in Dickinson, N.D. Gene grew up in Sentinel Butte, N.D. Gene served in the United States Army with overseas service in Germany. On June 30, 1962, Gene married Mildred Alyce Hakert, and they made their home in Billings on a small farm until retirement in 2012.

Gene worked for Fruehauf Trailers, and later completed flight training and began his aviation career, rising to Chief Flight Instructor and later Senior Aviator for Big Sky Airlines, until being diagnosed with diabetes, resulting in early retirement. Gene then studied Drafting at City College at MSUB and was a professional draftsman at MRL Equipment Company. After retiring, Gene became grandpa to many babies over the years at the family-owned preschool, Toddle Town Children’s Academy, and found joy in caring for and spending time with his grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mildred Wehrman; sons Michael (Lauren) Wehrman of Billings, their children Sarah, Walter, and Oscar, Rob (Kathy) Wehrman of Hudson, Wis., their children Carlee, Levi and Molly, Joseph (Tammy) Wehrman of Colorado Springs, Colo., their children Hannah, Gabi and Ethan; siblings Teresa Burns of Portland, Ore., JoAnn Schillo of Bismarck, N.D., Gerhardt Wehrman of Creston, B.C., Canada, Raymond Wehrman of Bismarck, Virginia Bares of Bismarck, Dorothy Holt of Vancouver, B.C., Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Helen Wehrman, his son Tim Wehrman, and his sister Mary Maddox.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, July 17, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Cremation and Funeral Gallery, 29 Eighth St. W., Billings, MT 59101. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m., with lunch following at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 226 Wicks Lane, Billings, MT 59105.

Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery. Condolences may be sent to the family at through “Our Families.”
