HARDIN - Greeley Hughes Not Afraid, Sr., 63 of Hardin passed away late Thursday evening Sept. 11, 2008, in the St. Vincent Hospital.

Alachuuehkkuitche' "Returns with Good Deeds to Tell" was born Nov. 2, 1944, in Crow Agency, a son of Joseph Not Afraid, Jr. and Olive Bear Ground. Otto (Elamer) Bear Ground, Frances Bends and Donald Stewart, Sr. raised him. He received his early education in Crow Agency and Wyola, before graduating from Lodge Grass High School in 1964. While in school, he excelled in football and was honored by being selected to the Montana All State football team and was selected to the east and west Shrine game. After his schooling, he relocated to California to attend electrical trade school, returning to Montana in 1969.

His athletic talents were also superb in the rodeo arena, where he was saddle bronc champion. He later served as an arena director for the PRCA in Wyoming, Utah and California. He was a close friend of the PRCA World Saddle Bronc Champion, Monte "Hawkeye" Henson and later naming his youngest son after him. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Bad War Deeds Clan, a child of the Big Lodge and the Night Hawk Singers. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, who loved to attend and sing at Pow-wows.

Greeley married Stella Hill on Aug.8, 1978 in Billings and the couple made their home in Hardin.

His parents, son Gordon Shawn Bear Ground, sisters Irene Not Afraid and Marjorie Wilkinson and brothers, Melvin, Virgil Williamson, Burton Bear Ground, Cedric Walks Over Ice, Gary and Alfonso Phalen, Art and John Fitzpatrick, Dee, Gary and Wayne Not Afraid Granddaughter Amanda Toineeta, Great grand baby Jalene Bright Wing preceded Greeley in death.

Survivors include his wife, Stella, daughters, Garnett (Henry) Bright Wings, Geri (Justin) Racine, Colleen (Don) Adams, Verlie (Larry) Big Lake Sr., Olivia (Barry) Real Bird, Sally Not Afraid and Luzenia (Alden) Big Man Jr.; sons Ben Stands, Tilton Old Bull Sr. Greeley James Bear Ground Jr. and Gary Bear Ground, Joseph (Tillie) Bear Cloud, Jr., Cedric T. Walks Over the Ice, Dee (Johanna) Jordan and Greeley "Hawkeye" (Brianna Seder) Not Afraid, Jr.; adopted daughters Cassandra (Jason) Kaline, Kristy Grant and Lorna (Frank) Big Hair Emma Big Man, Rose Hill; adopted sons, Josh and Donald Stewart, Harold Big Lake, Jerod Reeves, Brian Pretty Eagle, Terry Singer, Jeremy and Josh Black Eagle, Colton Herrera; his sisters, Clarice (Ronnie) Medicine Crow, Donna Hill, Barbara (Kenneth) Spotted, Janet (Darrin) Little Light, Almeda (Dean) Good Luck Sr., Regina Goes Ahead, Delma Yarlott, Mary (Hartford) Black Eagle, Garnett (Sterling) Watan, Shirley (Charles) Stewart, Cora (Alfred) Teeth, Elizabeth (Bruce) White, Paulette, Francine Not Afraid, Diane (Andy) Russell, Geneva Stewart, Sharolyn (Chester) Nomee Sr., Debbie (Jack) Old Horn, Wilma Backbone, Dorothy Stops, Eldora (Ben) Big Man, Melvine Jefferson, Adelia Spotted Horse, Bertha Nomee, Loreen (Myron) Crooked Arm, Roberta Walks Over Ice and Lorraine (Joe) Bear Cloud, Sr.; his brothers, Calvin Herrera Sr.Burton (Randine) Pretty On Top Sr., Robert (Tina), Wesley (Twyla) and Donald (Jony) Stewart, Jr., Victor (Janice) Singer, Sid (LaVonne) Fitzpatrick, Carson (Verlie) Walks Over the Ice, Randy Phalen, Bill (Berdine) and Wesley (Rebecca) Stops, Sr., Jim, Carson, Bill Yellow Tail, Garlin, Marlin (Reva) Not Afraid; 65 grandchildren 8 of which were raised as his own Iverson, Ileana, LaRee, Larry Dean Big Lake Jr., DJ, Jaylynn, Shawn , D'angelo Not Afraid; 18 great grandchildren; his adopted parents, Cyril and Julia Not Afraid; as well as his extended family including the Walks Over the Ice, Hill, Whiteman, Yellowmule, Williamson, Dust, Red Star, Not Afraid, Stops, Fighter and Macavinta Family of Utah. We have a very large family please accept our apology if we have missed anyone.

Rosary will be recited 4 p.m., Monday Sept. 15, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Tuesday in the Crow Agency St. Dennis Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
