CROW AGENCY - Mervin Perry Eastman, 75, a Crow elder, passed to the other side of the camp on April 28, 2011.

Kuasaaleeta "Outstanding in the middle," was born Jan. 9, 1936, in Crow Agency, a son of Perry and Lucy Cummins Eastman. He grew up in the Wyola, Lodge Grass and Kirby areas, receiving his education in Busby before graduating from Lodge Grass High School.

Mervin married Jeanette LaFountaine and they later divorced. He married Darlene Bad Bear on Oct. 26, 1962, in Sheridan, Wyo., and the couple made their home in Crow Agency.

He worked for area farms and ranches and then began a career with the Crow Tribe, serving in several capacities including Fish and Game, Law enforcement and most recently as an advisor. He was known for his racehorse training abilities.

Mervin was a member of the Catholic Church, Whistling Water Clan and was a Whistling Water child.

His wife, Darlene; grandson Kyle Kevin; sister Agnes Faraway; and brothers Delmar and Richard Eastman, Clarence, Robert and Kenneth Brien Sr. preceded Mervin in death.

Survivors include his children Billy Ray (Karen), Edward (Darci), Carl (Mary Ann) and Mervalene Eastman, Curtis (Nadia) Bad Bear, Debbie (Larry) Cady, Mervin and John (Carla) Lei; his siblings Ron (Bernadine) and Marvin (Gail), Sidney (Veronica) Eastman, Harold "Buster" Brien, John (Mary) and Richards Cummins III, Tommy (Mildred) Carpenter, Dorothy (Perry) Huff, Anna Bear Cloud, Jean St. Germaine, William (Pamela) Backbone, James and Sam Takes Horse, Lavonne (Johnson) Roan Horse, Cathy (Brian) Standing Rock, Shirley (Joe) Kristufek, Marlene Stewart, Sarah, Lucy, Lee and Sue Takes Horse, Arlen (Francine), Bernie and Harrison (Angie) Shoyo Jr.; his special "kids" Julie, Audi, Sheila, Georgette and Newton Jr.; his grandchildren, Maureen (Lewellyn), Geoffrey (Sunshine) Ross, Jeffrey Alan, Billy (Erlis) Jr. Miriam, Heather, Jeremy Walker, Amberly, Teffany, Perry Kyle, Jonathan, Chelsey, Nyia, Ray Dawn, RandallJames, Angel, Robbie, John Jr., Eleece, Taylor, Vonnda, Chelsea, Shelby, Mikajla, Naomi, Courtney Jo, Nakola, Chase and Cadryn; his great grandchildren Lil B, Lacey Ann, Jeffana, Joshua, Wyatt, James, Carlyssa, Peyton, Winters, Keira, Armani Kay, Erika, Riley, Kobe, McKenna, Caleb, Keatyn, Abbi, Sierra, Daya, Damon, Charlei, Morgan, Dusty, Debbie and Madison; his adopted children, Wendy Dean, Ken Clark, Kenneth, Lucille, Martha, Robert III, Woodrow, Curtis, Eric, Danny, Sherri, Barbie, Harold, Vernon, Larry Dean, Bobaleen, Valerie, Barbara Susan, Barbara Alcyine, Roberta Hernandez, Harold Jess and Darwina Brien, Sheila Hart, Jodi, Caroline, Perry, Suzanne, Timothy, Anne Marie, Beverly, Patricia, Jolene, Mary, Larry Brandon, Myron, Richelle, Franklin and Ricky Eastman, Barney, Bernadine, Elda, George, Polly and Leroy Cummins; as well as his extended family including the Eastman, Brien, Cummins, Backbone, One Goose, Round Face, Big Day, Beartusk, LaFranier, Bixby, Dahle, Pittman, Pease, Bolson, Storm and Takes Horse families. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the nursing staff and physicians at the Crow Agency IHS Hospital and Billings Clinic oncology department for all of their compassionate care. We would like to convey a special thank-you to Beverly Big Man and George Peters for their friendship and assistance with his spiritual needs.

Rosary will be recited 4 p.m. Monday May 2, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, in the Crow Agency St. Dennis Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
