FROID — Funeral services for Romona Ryder will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22. Rev. Tim Hutslar will officiate at the service at the Froid High School Gymnasium; interment will be in Froid South Cemetery.
Romona died early Thursday morning, June 17, at Roosevelt Medical Center in Culbertson; she was injured when a severe thunderstorm destroyed her home west of Froid.
Romona Jean Ryder was born Dec. 30, 1960, in Williston, N. D. In 1969, when Romona was in the third grade, her family moved to Westby, Mont., where she spent the remainder of her childhood. Her first job in high school was in Plentywood at the Diary Queen. After Romona graduated from Westby High School, she attended college in Havre, Mont., and achieved an associate’s degree in business. After college, Romona moved to Plentywood and worked for Tom Darland Law Firm as a legal secretary. She also worked in the dispatch office in Plentywood.
It was in Plentywood, that Romona met Pat Ryder and he danced his way into her heart. It was not uncommon to see people clear the dance floor to watch Pat and Romona jitterbug. They were married on July 24, 1982, in Plentywood, at the Congregational Church. Twenty-three years later, their daughter Patricia was married in the same church. In 1984, Pat and Romona moved to Froid where they raised their three children, Patricia, Kyle and Beau.
Romona was very involved in the Froid community and was well known for her wonderful baking and cooking. She was famous for her breadsticks and cakes. Romona was a passionate fan of Froid Cardinal athletics. She worked at GIA and her “Notes from Romona” appeared in the Searchlight. She was a terrific hostess and loved to entertain. Guests never left hungry and her cooking was talked about for days afterward. She was a wonderful babysitter and loved children. She was a very proud, fun and involved grandma of grandson, James, and already loved granddaughter, Reese, who is expected in August.
She is survived by her husband, Pat Ryder; her children, Patricia (Justin) Maddison of Williston, N.D., Kyle (Jodi) Ryder of Dickinson, N.D., and Beau Ryder of Bozeman, Mont.; her parents, Donald and Shirley Quam of Westby, Mont.; siblings Colleen (LeRoy) Sorenson, Patrick (Tina) Quam, Sherry (Jay) Stockdill all of Plentywood, Mont., and Corrine Quam of Wenatchee, Wash.; her father and mother-in-law, Romain and Yvonne Ryder of Froid, Mont.; her brothers and sisters-in-law Art Ryder of Froid, Mont., Rob (LeaAnn) Ryder of Plentywood, Mont., Diana (Pete) Lodahl of Froid, Mont.; her numerous nieces and nephews and two special children, April and Autumn McCabe. She is preceded in death by her grandparents Bryan and Mammie Albert and Margaret and Henri Quam and her brother-in-law Jeff Ryder.
Just as Romona improved the lives of those around her when she was here on Earth, she continued to do so even after her death: her eyes were harvested and donated to someone in need.
