MANHATTAN — Sam Hofman went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 19, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born Dec. 26, 1928, to Peter and Ida (Sinnema) Hofman in their home near Manhattan.
He attended various country schools in the Manhattan area through third grade. He then attended fourth through tenth grades at Manhattan Christian School and finished his last two years of high school at Western Christian School in Hull, Iowa. Sam went to one year of school at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., before returning to Montana to farm with his father.
It was while he attended Calvin College that he met his bride, Ruth S. Westendorp. They were married Oct. 18, 1949, and enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage.
Sam considered himself a farmer/rancher/seed grower. In reality, he was also a very active participant in family, community and state. He led and was on numerous committees and boards on local, community and statewide levels. Sam felt privileged to serve as a state senator from 1986 to 1990.
Whether it was as a farmer, rancher or walking the halls in Helena, Sam always strove to live out his deep faith. He loved God, his family, people, ideas and discussions. He was passionate and determined, and had a sense of humor in all that he did. He lived a full and grateful life.
Sam and Ruth were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren: son, Robert (Margaret) Hofman and their children, Jason (Trista) Hofman (Aubrey, Ethan, Ryan), Melissa (Tony) Hansen (Eli, Isaiah, Brielle), Jeremy (Alisha) Hofman (Sam) and Kim (Evan) Swager (Colton); son, Rich (Colleen) Hofman and their children, Amy (Justin) Fehsal (Brayden), Carrie Hofman, and Rick (Katie) Hofman (Noah, Hayli); daughter, Jude (Greg) Hofman and their children, Ben (Mia) Hofman and Jessica (Casey Moore) Hofman (Julian); daughter, Sharon L. Hofman; and dear friend, (daughter), Shirley Vanderstelt.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Ida (Sinnema) Hofman. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; the aforementioned children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Ida Mae and Satch Freswick; nephews, Casey (Bev) Freswick, David (June) Freswick, Ron Freswick, and Dale Freswick; and many cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their wonderful care and professionalism. A special thanks to the men who met with him and transported him to the Garden Café for coffee; your deep friendship sustained him in many ways.
