HARDIN — Woodrow Leon Pretty On Top, 46, of rural Hardin, died Sept. 8, 2011, at his home.
Uush daa chiia baa wua luushii chaas "Feeds Many People" was born Sept. 12, 1964, in Crow Agency, a son of Thomas and Beverly Stewart Pretty On Top. He was raised in the Crow Agency area and received his education in Hardin, Lodge Grass and Ashland.
Smoke, as he was affectionately known, met the love of his life Sophie Ten Bear at the age of 15 and the couple was married on March 12, 1986, in Crow Agency. The couple made their home south of Hardin.
He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and was a Greasy Mouth child. He was a Good Samaritan, who was always willing to help others in need. He was known for his ability to erect tepees during the Crow Fair; he once assisted in setting up over 400 tepees in one day.
Smoke worked for Big Horn County for 15 years, retiring in 2008, as a maintenance worker. He later worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He loved the outdoors, hunting, mechanic work and John Wayne movies. However, he most enjoyed the time he could spend with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his sense of humor.
Survivors include his parents; his loving wife Sophie; his daughters Mary (Jonathon) Kelley and Vanessa Pretty On Top; his son Woodrow Pretty On Top Jr.; his sisters Norma (Dominic) Yellowmule and Micheleen (Tom) Filesteel; his brothers Grover (Christy) Deputee, Ben Cloud, Dean (Tina), Shawn (Arlene) and Kenny (Mitzi) Pretty On Top; his grandparents Christine Stewart, Clara Nomee, Betty Caufield, Alice Mae White Clay and John Pretty On Top; as well as numerous adopted sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the Crow Agency Spirit of Life Four Square Church. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
