This Sunday will again be Food Bank Sunday, a time to gather food and funds for the Billings Food Bank. This summer has been a very busy time for the food bank. The Billings Food bank supplies between 5,000 and 6,000 food boxes to area families and individuals, and that has placed a strain on reserves.
Items most needed at this time are individual-size juices, milk, fruit, snack bars, sandwich fixings, peanut butter and jelly, sandwich-size plastic bags, etc. for sack lunches. Also needed are soup crackers, soups, one-can meals, meat helpers, canned meats, and there is a demand for fresh meats, especially hamburger, pork and chicken.
The requests for baby formula, particularly Similac and Enfamil, have greatly increased, as have requests for disposable diapers.
The Billings Food Bank’s large garden located at Oscar’s Park is in need or garden tools and equipment, as well as regular tools for general upkeep. If you have spares, please consider donating them. The garden can also use volunteers, for anyone who has an interest.
Volunteers are always welcome at the food bank. With the increase in requests for assistance, there is an urgent need for teams of volunteers to fill boxes. This is a great project for a group from work or a group of friends. There is also a need for food sorters and sandwich and sack-lunch makers.
If you have food to be picked up, would like to hear more about the food bank, or are interested in volunteering, call 259-2856. The Billings Food Bank is at 2112 Fourth Ave. N., and the mailing address is P.O. Box 1258, Billings, MT 59103.
