St. Vincent Healthcare employees donated 15 portable defibrillators to School District 2 during a recent board meeting.

The gift, valued at $15,000, will provide high schools, middle schools and elementary schools with 15 automated external defibrillators.

The gift came through St. Vincent Healthcare’s Share Our Spirit campaign. Each fall, hospital employees may designate a donation toward a specific community need.

An automated external defibrillator is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest.

St. Vincent Healthcare will train School District 2 employees how to use the defibrillators.

The 15 devices are halfway to the goal to ensure AEDs are available in all schools.
