Some of the 52 bison illegally freed from a Yellowstone National Park quarantine facility have been located two days later in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, about 5 miles southeast.
The bison won't be recaptured unless they return to the area of the capture facility, according to a park press release.
The animals were being detained until they proved disease-free enough for possible relocation to the Fort Peck Reservation in Eastern Montana. On Tuesday it was discovered that someone had used bolt cutters to open a fence holding the bison, which were all bulls.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by park law enforcement officials. Anyone with information is being asked to call the Yellowstone National Park Tip Line at 307-344-2132 or email YELL_LEO@nps.gov.
