Trade bead expert Steve McCracken will be speaking about the history and origin of early trade beads and selling his own trade bead jewelry at Chief Plenty Coups State Park on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Some of his work contains trade beads that are more than 200 years old. Beads were traded between Euro-American fur traders and Native Americans throughout much of North America. Depending on the Native American tribe, trade beads could represent an individual’s status and different colors could have separate values. Trade beads are also on display in the Chief Plenty Coups State visitor center.
