A man accused of molesting a child he was babysitting has been offered a plea deal calling for 40 years in prison.

Jerrod Jay Schalk, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and a single count of failing to register as a sex offender on Thursday. The plea deal calls for a fourth felony charge of attempted sexual intercourse without consent to be dismissed at sentencing.

Schalk sexually assaulted a 9-year-old he was babysitting on two occasions sometime between December 2014 and January 2016, according to an admission Schalk made as part of the plea deal. He told the child not to tell about the assaults and that she would not see her mother again if she did, charges alleged.

Schalk had previous convictions for sodomy and rape from Oregon in 2003 but did not register as a sex offender in Montana.

Schalk is being held in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility on a $25,000 bond. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
