While snowmelt runoff continues to cascade from the high country and muddy the rivers, reservoir fishing has been very good across Montana.
A good walleye bite is developing on Canyon Ferry Reservoir just in time for this weekend's Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival. There is a full field of 150 teams taking aim at a $10,000 top prize in the tournament, the last for Doug Breker, the tourney creator who said he is retiring from the spot after this year's event.
Walleye fishing is also very good on Fort Peck Reservoir right now with both good numbers of fish and some big fish being caught by anglers from one end of the lake to the other.
Trout fishermen will have to pick their destinations carefully, though there is some salmonfly action on the Big Hole River and some good fishing to be had on the Madison.
Big Hole: The salmonfly hatch is working its way up the river. Streamers are also producing good action. -Montana Troutfitters, Bozeman.
Bighorn Lake: Action has been a little slow with a few walleyes, smallmouth bass and sauger being caught. There is a lot of debris being carried into the lake by big inflows. Jigs, minnows and Gulp minnows are your best bets. - Minnow Bucket, Huntley.
Bighorn River: Flows are going up. Blue-winged olives and midges are hatching with some tan caddis starting to show up. All the usual nymphs are producing - sowbugs, scuds, black quills, Ray Charles and San Juan worms. - Bighorn Fly and Tackle.
Boulder: River is running very high. - Rainbow Run Fly Shop.
Canyon Ferry: Good rainbow action can be found around White Earth trolling Rock 'n Rolls, crankbaits or cowbells. Most rainbows are being caught 10 to 20 feet below the surface. Good walleye action can be found throughout the reservoir, however, the best action has been between Ponds 2, 3 and 4, as well as Duck Creek, Goose Bay and Avalanche. Beware of floating debris, especially on the south end of the reservoir. - FWP, Helena.
Cooney: Action is pretty slow. Fish that are being caught are small ones. - Minnow Bucket, Huntley.
Deadmans Basin: A lot of fishermen are out and are catching trout and salmon. Both bank and boat fishing is producing. No reports of tiger muskies. - Super D, Ryegate.
Flathead: The lake is fishing well for lakers. Inflows have decreased, and muddy waters are clearing on the river delta. Lake trout are suspended 40 to 50 feet down hugging the thermocline, with fish stacked up on the delta on the north end of the lake. - MoFisch Charters, Lakeside.
Fort Peck, Dam area: Fishing is red-hot all over. The Big Dry Arm is producing, and action is good down to the Pines. Minnows, leeches and crawlers are all working on jigs, Lindy rigs and bottom bouncers. Lake trout fishing is good at Haxby Point and at Bear Creek with fish down 70 to 100 feet. An occasional salmon is being caught. - Lakeridge, Fort Peck.
Fort Peck, Hell Creek: Walleye fishing is very good, with plenty of eating-sized fish being caught and some bigger fish, including 10-pounders coming in. Jigs in the weedy shallows are a good tactic, along with bottom bouncers and spinners or crawler harnesses. Smallmouth bass are biting well, too. - Hell Creek Marina.
Gallatin: The river is still high and muddy. - Montana Troutfitters, Bozeman.
Hauser: Rainbow fishing has been good trolling cowbells tipped with a crawler around Black Sandy and the Causeway. Walleye are being caught in the Causeway and Lake Helena. The best bet has been while trolling bottom bouncers or drifting jigs tipped with a leech or worm. - FWP, Helena.
Holter: Rainbow fishing is good, trolling cowbells tipped with a crawler throughout the reservoir. The rainbows are being caught 10 to 15 feet deep. Walleye fishing continues to improve with some good catches being reported around Cottonwood Creek, Oxbow and bays around the dam. - FWP, Helena.
Madison: The upper river is in good shape. Salmonflies are hatching in Beartrap Canyon. Use big dark nymphs above the hatch. The lower river is fishing well all the way to Greycliff. - Montana Troutfitters, Bozeman.
Missouri, Below Holter: Dry fly-fishing is on. Caddis and PMDs are hatching and the fishing is getting better and better. The nymphing and streamer fishing are also good. - Montana Fly Goods, Helena.
Nelson: Action remains a bit spotty on the reservoir. Some walleyes are being caught, with many in the smaller sizes. Bottom bouncers with nightcrawlers and leeches are your best bet, with jigs also producing. - Westside Sports, Malta.
Stillwater: It's still flowing high. - Rainbow Run Fly Shop.
Tongue River Reservoir: Walleye and crappies are biting well, and the smallmouth bass are still hitting. Minnows are working well. Leeches are also taking walleyes. The cliffs and dam area are producing well. - Tongue River Marina.
Yellowstone, Huntley: Fishing is pretty slow with the river high and muddy. Some catfish are being caught on cut bait and shrimp. Hit the backwaters out of the main flow. - Minnow Bucket, Huntley.
Yellowstone, Livingston: Still high and muddy. - Montana Troutfitters, Bozeman.
Boysen: Walleye are biting well on jigs and worms. Lime green and chartreuse are good colors. Fish are holding in 12 to 15 feet. Rainbow trout are hitting as well. Shad Raps and crawler harnesses are your best bet. - Boysen Lake Marina.
Buffalo Bill: With inflows still well above 5,000 cubic feet per second, waters remain muddy, and fishing on the reservoir remains slow. Very few anglers are venturing out on Buffalo Bill for now. - Robert Crooks, Cody.
Keyhole: Fishing is good with walleyes and bass hitting. Minnows, leeches and nightcrawlers are all producing fish. Northern pike action is a bit slower. - Keyhole Marina.
