Two Republicans have filed to replace Travis Kavulla on Montana’s Public Service Commission.

State legislator Rob Cook, of Shelby, and Cory McKinney of Great Falls have registered as candidates for the Public Service Commission District 1. The district stretches west to east from Great Falls to Sidney and north to south from Outlook to Wibaux.

Kavulla, a Republican from Great Falls, has occupied the seat for two consecutive four-year terms, which is the state limit for service. No Democrats have filed to represent the district on regulated utility matters.

Cook currently serves in the state House of Representatives, representing Conrad. He told The Gazette on Tuesday that his engineering background and math aptitude would help the commission and utility customers.

McKinney did not respond to a phone call Tuesday.
