Oil that dripped onto a hot steam pipe caused a small fire early Thursday at PPL Montana’s Corette plant PPL Montana on Charlene Street.

Billings Fire Department Battalion Chief Ed Regele said oil hitting the hot pipe ignited insulation wrapped around the exposed pipe.

He said damages were minor.

“The potential was there, but it didn’t really turn into anything,” Regele said.

Four fire engines initially responded at 1:22 a.m. Thursday, but two were relieved within minutes, Regele said.

“It didn’t get into any part of the building itself,” Regele said. “It was isolated to the insulation. A real small amount of insulation.”
