In the service

Air Force Airman Joshua W. Vannoy graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Vannoy is the son of Sandra Rucera and William Vannoy, both of Billings, and a 2013 graduate of Billings West High.

Air Force Airman William D. Littell graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Littell is the son of Veesha Murray, of Powell, Wyo., and William Littell, of Big Timber, and a 2013 graduate of Powell High School.

Organizations

The Cornwell Ranch in Glasgow has received the Montana Neighbor Award from the state of Montana. Award winners must demonstrate an exceptional level of cooperation, land stewardship, conservation ethic, neighborly land access and community leadership. Seven awards were presented; the Cornwell Ranch was the only one in Eastern Montana.

Kathy Melville, a member of Tower Toastmasters, has completed her Advanced Communicator Bronze in the Toastmasters program. Toastmasters International is a nonprofit, self-paced educational organization dedicated to improving skills in communication and leadership. One of six Toastmasters clubs in Billings, the Tower Toastmasters Club meets Tuesdays from 12:05 to 1 p.m. at in the lower level of First Interstate Bank at 401 N. 31st St. For more information, visit www.toastmasters.org.

In the schools

The State Skills Conference tested the skills of high school and college students in a competition at MSU-Northern in Havre. Thirty-three schools were represented. USALocal students who placed in the top three in a category are:

Automotive Service Technology: 2. Kyle McClintock and 3. Kayne Fisher, both of the Billings Career Center.

Automotive Service Technology Post-Secondary: 1. Matthew Tucker  and 3. Ian Hannah, both of City College MSU Billings.

Carpentry: 1. Nate Liebe of the Billings Career Center.

Combination Welding Post-Secondary: 1. Scott Dark and 3. Brandon Hammond, both from City College MSU Billings.

Diesel Equipment Technology Post-Secondary: 2. Christian Watts and 3. Chris Murphy, both from City College MSU Billings.

Nicholas Duncan, of Billings, was named to the dean’s list for academic excellence for the fall 2013 semester at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Md.

Chase Templet, a 2011 graduate of Billings West High, was presented the English Outstanding Junior Award at Montana State University Bozeman at an awards ceremony. Templet returned from a trip to Stratford upon Avon and London, England, where he studied the life and work of Shakespeare. He plans to continue his studies toward a Ph.D in literature.

Stephan Meyer of Billing was among the students who participated in the 2014 Research and Creative Works Symposium at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, on April 8. Meyer presented a creative work titled "Up-Hill Assist Self-Powered Bicycle." The research was done with Prof. Becca Edwards.

Annette Brant and John Carroll, both of Billings, were named to the fall 2013 dean’s list for academic excellence at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif.
