As floodwaters inundated parts of Huntley Project Sunday, it was fire that was on the minds of the friends, family and graduates that filled the nearly finished Huntley Project High School gym.

The 45 graduates from the class of 2011 were the first to receive their diplomas in the new high school, built on the site where a September 2008 fire destroyed their school when they were just starting their sophomore year.

Five students shared valedictorian honors: Samantha Albrecht, Bailey Craig, BrieAnna Geck, Emily Koehn and Kaitlyn Wurnig.

Each of the valedictorians addressed the crowd, talking about their class' ability to persevere during the hardship after the fire.
