Local cyclists rode to the Billings offices of Democratic senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester today to present them with “Golden Wheel Awards.”

BikeNet, a nonprofit group that supports trails in the community, is aiming to increase awareness of the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which funds local parks, trails, and open spaces using offshore oil and gas royalties.

The Descro Park Trail and the Billings Skate Park have been local beneficiaries of the fund.

Over the course of its 40-year existence, funding for the LWCF has been inconsistent. Because the LWCF is funded by royalties from offshore oil and gas exploration, the recent spill in the Gulf of Mexico has sparked interest in proposed legislation to grant permanent funding for the LWCF.

Tester and Baucus were given the awards to thank them for their support of the fund and boost awareness of the fund.
