A benefit will be held Saturday at the American Legion Hall, 1540 Broadwater Ave., for the Billings family of Zaria Rey Santos, the 4-year-old killed in a car fire July 9.

The event will be from noon until 4 p.m. and will feature a silent auction, a raffle and a 50/50 raffle.

The benefit is being organized by friends who know the family, said Jackee Taylor. “It’s just a collective effort by the friends of the Santos family.”

Zaria was riding in a Subaru Impreza with her mother, Shalom Santos, and three others on a trip to Oregon with another family in a separate car. The people in the second car told them by radio they could see gas leaking from the Santos car. Seconds after the car stopped on Interstate 90 near Big Timber, it erupted into flames.

The other four riders in the car survived, but Zaria died.

The circumstances of the event has sent shockwaves throughout the community

“So many people knew Shalom and so many people knew her daughter,” Taylor said. “We’re just trying as friends and family and community to keep the Santos family together right now.”

Taylor said the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.

Organizers already have what they need for the event, but “we’re still looking for somebody to donate a couple of hours and maybe come and do some live music,” she said.

The deadline to donate items for the silent auction or raffle is Thursday and Taylor may be contacted 850-9293.

Donations may be made to the Santos Family Memorial at the First Interstate Bank and Stockman Bank, or online at gofundme.com/bdesbw.
