A Billings City Council member publicly condemned Yellowstone County Treasurer Max Lenington for his recent "unfortunate remarks."

Ward 3 Councilwoman Becky Bird said Lenington's remarks, including the use of the "N-word" in an email he sent out from his work computer, "really tarnish the people of this state."

She made the comments at the end of a council work session Monday night, and she suggested the council as a whole publicly rebuke Lenington.

She said people need to know that Lenington's derogatory emails "absolutely without question do not represent the views of people in this city, in this county or in this state."

None of Bird's colleagues said anything about taking action as a council, but Ward 5 Councilman Ken Crouch said "I certainly agree with everything" Bird said.

Mayor Tom Hanel said it might be better for council mermbers to make their views known as individuals, but added, "I don't think anyone disagrees whatsoever" with Bird.
