The investigation into a body found last week in Coulson Park is being called a homicide, Sheriff Mike Linder said on Tuesday.

Linder identified the man whose body was found as Jack Jason Cox, 47, of Billings.

The cause of death remains “undetermined” at this point, Linder said.

The body was found in the underbrush at around 6 p.m. last Wednesday, spotted by two men who authorities say were looking for rocks.

The investigation closed down the park overnight and into Thursday morning.

The body was at such an advanced stage of decomposition that identifying features such as gender were not immediately apparent. But an autopsy completed last Thursday revealed the body to be male.

The body still had remnants of clothing, and other items that helped in the identification process. It had been there for probably months, the Sheriff’s office said.
