The body of an unidentified male was recovered Monday afternoon from the Yellowstone River near Worden, Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder said.
In a Tuesday afternoon press release, Linder said the man appears to have been dead for about one week and was too decomposed to visually identify. Samples have been sent to the state crime lab in Missoula for DNA testing, the release stated.
Deputies had responded Monday at about 2:30 p.m. after a landowner reported a body that was hung up on a tree in the river near his property.
In an interview, Linder said an autopsy performed Tuesday did not reveal the cause of death. He added that investigators "did not find any signs of foul play."
Linder said his office has already gotten several calls from the public related to missing-person reports since media reports of the body's discovery were published earlier Tuesday.
"Since the information has gone out to the media, we are following up on calls that are coming in," he said. "We'll probably have more in the days to follow."
