BILLINGS (AP) - Clifford Birdinground, the Crow tribal leader under federal indictment in what authorities call a fraud scheme with an automobile dealership, has resigned as chairman.

He made the announcement in a letter addressed to tribal Vice Chairman Vincent Goes Ahead Jr., and dated Sept. 5. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the resignation Monday.

"It has been an honor for me to serve as the chairman of the Crow Nation for the past two years," Birdinground wrote. "My prayers are for the continued prosperity and success of the Crow Nation."

Repeated telephone calls to the tribal offices at Crow Agency went unanswered Monday.

Birdinground's attorney in the federal case did not immediately return telephone messages.
