Yellowstone County commissioners on Tuesday selected Schutz Foss Architects of Billings for a project to expand the jail.

Schutz Foss was one of four local architectural firms to submit proposals for consideration by the county.

A committee headed by Sheriff Mike Linder recommended Schutz Foss after a review and interviews of the applicants.

Commissioners agreed to enter into contract negotiations with Schutz Foss for design and engineering work.

The county is considering adding a new women’s wing that could house 100 beds on the east side of the building to relieve crowding throughout the jail.

The Yellowstone County Detention Facility, 3165 King Ave. E., has an official baseline capacity of 286 inmates but regularly houses more than 400. The expansion could cost as little as $5 million, and county officials would like to build it without raising property taxes through a bond.
