A woman accused of hitting another woman in the head with a baseball bat inside a downtown Billings restaurant was charged Thursday with felony assault with a weapon.
Prosecutors say Cassie Ann Burling admitted hitting the woman because the woman was involved sexually with Burling's husband.
"That's what you get for sleeping with my husband," Burling is alleged to have said after the attack.
Burling made her initial appearance in Justice Court by video from the county jail. Judge Pedro Hernandez set bond at $25,000 after Deputy County Attorney Julie Mees said Burling is accused of a violent attack. Burling has no prior felony convictions, Mees said, but she has misdemeanor convictions for assault and unlawful transaction with a child.
According to police and court records, officers were called Thursday to the Denny's Restaurant at 501 N. 27th St. at 2:22 a.m. An officer said he found the victim, 22-year-old Crystal White, inside the restaurant with an open wound to her forehead and a large amount of blood around her. An aluminum baseball bat was found nearby.
White was taken to the St. Vincent Healthcare emergency room for treatment. The extent of her injuries was unclear Thursday. A hospital spokeswoman said White was not listed on the hospital's patient roster. White could have been released from the hospital, or she could have requested her status remain confidential.
White told an officer she was sitting in the restaurant when she was hit by a woman with long blond hair she knew only as Cassie, court records state. White said she did not know why the woman hit her.
A witness told officers that she heard Burling tell White after the attack: "That's what you get for sleeping with my husband."
An officer who arrested Burling reported she also made a comment about the incident while being escorted to a patrol car.
"My husband is (sleeping with) some other chick, so I hit her and taught her a lesson," Burling said, according to the officer.
Burling was ordered to appear Tuesday for arraignment in District Court.
