The Park County Sheriff's Office identified on Friday two people found dead after an apparent murder-suicide on Thursday in Gardiner as Steve A. Cole, 63, and Debi J. Roberts, 59.

Undersheriff Scott Hamilton said that autopsies of Cole and Roberts, both of Gardiner, were scheduled to begin Friday afternoon in Bozeman.

"We're hoping that it will confirm what we believe to be the cause of death," he said.

Hamilton did not indicate what investigators believe is the cause of death for the two.

Authorities found Cole dead on Thursday evening at Roberts' home. Roberts was critically wounded and died at the scene a short time later, according to the sheriff's office.

On Thursday afternoon Roberts called authorities to report that a man was breaking into her home and that he'd already fired at least one shot.

She reported the man, later identified as Cole, by name, the sheriff's office said. A press release said the two previously dated.

Roberts was dead when officers arrived, according to the sheriff's office. Despite the efforts from emergency personnel at the scene, Roberts died.

Hamilton said that investigators believe that the incident was a murder-suicide.
