A Billings man accused of threatening a woman with a gun while claiming to make a citizen's arrest has been charged with a felony offense.

Larry Dean Cochrane, 52, is facing a charge of assault with a weapon following his arrest Tuesday at a downtown convenience store.

Cochrane was being held Thursday in the Yellowstone County jail on $7,500 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in District Court.

According to court records, police were called to the Holiday Station at Sixth Avenue North and North 27th Street at about 12:15 p.m. As they approached a man and woman outside the store, the man appeared to be attempting to conceal a handgun in his pocket.

An officer lunged at the man and was able to grab the gun away. The man, who officers said appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was handcuffed and arrested. He reportedly told officers he was making a citizen's arrest.

The 66-year-old woman said she was walking into the store when she saw a broken cell phone in the store parking lot and picked it up. The woman said the man then jumped out of a vehicle, grabbed her around the neck and told her the phone belonged to his girlfriend.

The man then pulled out a handgun, threatened her and told her she was under arrest, the woman said.
