A Billings man received a deferred sentence on Tuesday for what court records described as his third domestic assault conviction.
Nakia James White, 39, appeared in front of District Judge Russell Fagg, who handed down a three-year deferred sentence of imposition for a felony charge of partner or family member assault.
Fagg also ordered White to pay a $2,000 fine and complete a chemical dependency evaluation, an anger management course and a batterers intervention class.
The sentence came as part of a joint recommendation from White's public defender and the Yellowstone County Attorney's Office in exchange for a guilty plea.
Charging documents state that White went to his ex-girlfriend's house on July 25, 2013, and slapped her several times during an argument. A witness told police that White slapped the woman outside of the home several times before forcing her back inside, where slaps and screams could be heard from outside.
Prosecutors said that White has two previous domestic assault convictions and as many as four other assault convictions dating back to 1994.
"You obviously have an anger problem," Fagg told White during the hearing. "You're 39 years old. You should know better."
