A 36-year-old man has admitted to a felony charge for punching a 10-year-old boy who tried to stop an assault on his mother.

Thomas Joseph Mascarena appeared Thursday before District Judge Susan Watters and pleaded guilty to felony assault on a minor.

Mascarena also admitted to a misdemeanor charge of partner or family member assault for pushing and striking the boy's mother.

A plea agreement calls for Mascarena to receive a three-year deferred sentence at a hearing scheduled for Jan. 7.

Mascarena was charged in an incident on Jan. 22 at a residence of South 39th Street. A woman told officers that her boyfriend, Mascarena, forced his way inside her home.

Once inside, Mascarena pushed and hit her and then punched the woman's 10-year-old son with a closed fist when the boy grabbed Mascarena's jacket to pull him away.
