A Billings man appeared in court Monday on charges he assaulted his infant daughter Friday by grabbing her face so hard it left bruises.

Prosecutors have charged Jason Neal Purvis, 36, with felony assault on a minor and misdemeanor partner or family member assault.

Judge David A. Carter set the man’s bond at $20,000 and ordered him to appear for arraignment in district court on June 10.

Police arrested Purvis after responding to a report of possible child abuse at a Billings hospital Friday night. There, officers spoke with the child’s mother, who said that she had asked Purvis, the child’s father, to baby-sit the baby, who was born in March, according to charging documents.

An officer observed the bruises on the child’s face appeared to be from someone grabbing the child’s face.

The woman told police she returned home and found the child had marks on her face. When police contacted Purvis, he denied knowing how the child got the bruises.
