A Billings man received a deferred sentence in District Court on Monday for spanking his two stepdaughters with a cribbage board in 2013.

Kyle Matthew Thompson appeared on Friday before District Judge Gregory R. Todd, who gave him concurrent three-year deferred sentences for two felony counts of assault on a minor.

Todd also ordered Thompson, who admitted to the charges in February, to complete parenting and anger management courses.

Charging documents say that an elementary school counselor in 2012 told a social worker that she was concerned about physical abuse issues involving the two girls.

When police investigated, the girls told an officer that Thompson hit them on their buttocks with a cribbage board after they stole an item from their mother, according to the affidavit.

Charging documents say that he told an investigating officer that he did it so the girls "would realize what they did was wrong."
