A Billings judge on Friday gave a five-year suspended sentence to a man prosecutors say bit and kicked his wife in December.

District Judge Ingrid Gustafson sentenced Joel Robert Gonzalez to five years with the state Department of Corrections for a count of felony partner or family member assault.

Gonzalez bit his wife on the stomach, kicked her, pulled her hair and threatened to kill her, prosecutors said.

Officers arrested him at the Bourbon Street Motel, 3314 First Ave. N., last Dec. 8, court records state. A breath test showed that he had a blood alcohol content of .30 percent, nearly four times the legal limit for driving, the documents say.

Gonzalez has a criminal record that includes a 2007 manslaughter conviction in Utah, a prior assault conviction and three previous domestic abuse convictions, according to prosecutors.
