A 36-year-old man who admitted punching a 10-year-old boy was sentenced Tuesday in District Court.

Thomas Joseph Mascarena appeared before Judge Gregory Todd and was ordered to serve a three-year deferred sentence for felony assault on a minor.

The judge ordered Mascarena to serve a concurrent suspended jail sentence and pay a $550 fine for misdemeanor partner or family member assault.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement Mascarena reached with prosecutors for an incident on Jan. 22, 2012, at a residence on South 39th Street.

A woman at the residence told police that Mascarena was her boyfriend and he had forced his way inside her home.

Once inside, Mascarena pushed and hit the woman, then punched her 10-year-old son with a closed fist when the boy grabbed Mascarena's jacket to pull him away from his mother.
